 - Today we started off with eggs benedict for breakfast. A little while after getting to the clinic this morning, there was a line of people waiting to be seen. We have served over 300 patients and saw more students today, too! There was a shoulder injection (performed by Dr Patty Peters) and a few knee injections (performed by Dr Kyler Hardie).

- When we arrived at the clinic, the morning students were just beginning their weekly chapel service. Listening to the students sing and make a joyful noise to the Lord is heartwarming. Throughout the day team members with a little free time would play and entertain the students by playing cards, playing soccer or basketball, or teaching them some jump roping games (texaco, double dutch)! The smiles and laughter are priceless down here!!

- There was some rain last night and it down poured as soon as we all stepped off the bus into the hotel for the night. The trees look like they’re dead right now, but after this rain fall they will be budding by tomorrow!

This morning we started off with a delicious Guatemalan breakfast which included plantains, watermelon, pineapple, toast, black beans, sausage, and eggs with ranchero sauce.We then made our way to the church for the service and sang Here I am Lord to the congregation. The church is right next to the Lutheran School that we will be at on Thursday, so we got a little preview of it! At the church we met a North American keyboard player, “Carlos,“ who grew up in the States. He spent most of his time in Nebraska and had a conference at Augustana University in Sioux Falls. Ten years ago, it was suggested to him that he might do some work in Guatemala for awhile and he’s been here ever since. At the clinic today we saw a total of 60 patients, so our total is up to 108 patients that we have helped. We’ve seen quite a few babies and toddlers who are undernourished. Travel Day, May 30

 Yesterday, May 30, we traveled from Sioux Falls (14 of us) and Detroit (1 of us) to Dallas, then took our flight to Guatemala City.  There were plenty of delays, caused by a long wait to get our luggage, a long process to load all our project bags (27) and personal bags (1 per person), and backpacks and ourselves onto our bus, and then TRAFFIC! We stopped at Pollo Campero, our favorite fast-food here, for dinner, and then more traffic delays, finally arriving at our hotel at 10:36 local time, grateful for our many blessings today. We gave thanks to God for many things today:  Smooth transition with all the bags through the Sioux Falls airport Safe flights, including a “hard” landing in Guatemala City NO bags opened during our movement through Customs A wonderful, safe driver, Gregorio, who navigated us through miles of backups with a smile. Clinic Prep and First Day of Clinic, May 31

The team, recovered from our Friday travels and late arrival, enjoyed a huge breakfast of eggs, bacon, potatoes, pancakes and fruit. How can anyone eat all that? Well, a few of us did! And did I mention the delicious Guatemalan coffee with hot milk? The team spent a good hour this morning prepping meds for our pharmacy. Several analgesics and antibiotics were pre-measured into one month amounts. Vitamins for children and adults also were counted and saved in small zip-loc bags.  This morning we met our four translators who, in addition to Cristian, will help our medical teams, pharmacy and nutrition educators communicate effectively with patients.
