Tuesday at the Lutheran School and Church in Gualan, by Blogger JW

 - Today was another wonderful day as we have served 225 people to date. We did see a change moving to a nearby city from a rural, mostly agricultural, area. We saw children from the Lutheran school and community members today. All of the children were very respectful, polite, gave hugs, and were talkative. The children today had much cleaner teeth and brush them on a regular basis, unlike the children we’ve seen the past three days. The people who came today have better access to healthcare than in the rural area, though they’re only a twenty-minute drive (by Tuk-Tuk) away. A few of the city patients had already gone to the city clinic or hospital, had diagnostic procedures, but still came to see us and get our opinion. A major change is that we did not see as many malnourished or anemic patients as in the rural area.

- The school children and our team created a remarkable memory today that they will never forget. Some of the team members began playing basketball with the school kids towards the end of the day after packing up the clinic. The students and team members who did not play in the game cheered and laughed along the sidelines. 

- We have had many wonderful experiences so far on this trip. We are so thankful that God has blessed us with this amazing opportunity!

This morning we started off with a delicious Guatemalan breakfast which included plantains, watermelon, pineapple, toast, black beans, sausage, and eggs with ranchero sauce.We then made our way to the church for the service and sang Here I am Lord to the congregation. The church is right next to the Lutheran School that we will be at on Thursday, so we got a little preview of it! At the church we met a North American keyboard player, “Carlos,“ who grew up in the States. He spent most of his time in Nebraska and had a conference at Augustana University in Sioux Falls. Ten years ago, it was suggested to him that he might do some work in Guatemala for awhile and he’s been here ever since. At the clinic today we saw a total of 60 patients, so our total is up to 108 patients that we have helped. We’ve seen quite a few babies and toddlers who are undernourished. Travel Day, May 30

 Yesterday, May 30, we traveled from Sioux Falls (14 of us) and Detroit (1 of us) to Dallas, then took our flight to Guatemala City.  There were plenty of delays, caused by a long wait to get our luggage, a long process to load all our project bags (27) and personal bags (1 per person), and backpacks and ourselves onto our bus, and then TRAFFIC! We stopped at Pollo Campero, our favorite fast-food here, for dinner, and then more traffic delays, finally arriving at our hotel at 10:36 local time, grateful for our many blessings today. We gave thanks to God for many things today:  Smooth transition with all the bags through the Sioux Falls airport Safe flights, including a “hard” landing in Guatemala City NO bags opened during our movement through Customs A wonderful, safe driver, Gregorio, who navigated us through miles of backups with a smile. Clinic Prep and First Day of Clinic, May 31

The team, recovered from our Friday travels and late arrival, enjoyed a huge breakfast of eggs, bacon, potatoes, pancakes and fruit. How can anyone eat all that? Well, a few of us did! And did I mention the delicious Guatemalan coffee with hot milk? The team spent a good hour this morning prepping meds for our pharmacy. Several analgesics and antibiotics were pre-measured into one month amounts. Vitamins for children and adults also were counted and saved in small zip-loc bags.  This morning we met our four translators who, in addition to Cristian, will help our medical teams, pharmacy and nutrition educators communicate effectively with patients.
